Technology is an integral part of education, society and the workplace. Today’s students have never lived in a world without the internet or cell phones, and it is our responsibility to use technology in a way that enhances learning and in a way that prepares students for postsecondary education or the workplace. As of September 2013, Foothills Academy implemented the Google Apps for Education Suite for all students and staff. This comprehensive package includes Google Docs, Sites, Mail and Calendar; allowing students to get access to their school work anywhere they have Internet access. The benefits of this suite include real-time collaboration/feedback between student and teacher; instant backup of material; and increased student interest and engagement. The transition between school and home is now seamless. Chromebooks were introduced to students in the Fall of 2014.
Foothills Academy also has a comprehensive array of Assistive Technology that allows students to achieve to their highest potential, and we ensure that any technology that students use simply allows them to work differently. Technology is not put into place to make things easier for students, it is put into place as an alternative way for them to show their work or think critically. None of the technology we use is a crutch, and much of the Assistive Technology we put into place can be used by students in school, Provincial and Diploma exams, as well as being able to be used in University once students have graduated. Laptop program, iPad development, Read Write Gold, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Inspiration – to name a few.
