Our Science and Engineering Program is designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love of learning, while also helping to build important social skills. Through an exciting lineup of hands-on activities, students in grades 3-6 explore core science and engineering concepts in ways that bring lessons to life, with each activity paired with a social skill. From regulating emotions with stomp rockets to understanding others' feelings through bridge building, each week offers fun projects that develop both practical knowledge and social awareness.
Guided by enthusiastic instructors, kids learn to work together, communicate, and think critically. Every project is as interactive as it is educational, allowing young learners to connect with each other and build confidence in a supportive environment.
Weekly Breakdown of Activities
To keep programming engaging, fun and new for all participants, we tailor each session to the interests of the participants. No two Science and Engineering sessions are completely alike. However, most follow a structure similar to the following:
- Week 1: Introduction to Engineering – Bridge Building and Understanding Other’s Feelings
- Week 2: Aerospace Engineering – Stomp Rockets and Zones of Regulation
- Week 3: Chemistry in Action – DIY Lava Lamps- and Flexible Thinking
- Week 4: Structural Engineering – Earthquake-Proof Buildings and Being Part of a Group
- Week 5: Physics and Gravity – Egg Drop Challenge and Social Problem Solving
- Week 6: Forensics – Mystery Solving through Fingerprinting and Perspective Taking
- Week 7: Physics and Engineering – Marble Roller Coasters- What Others are Thinking
- Week 8: Engineering Extravaganza – Build Your Own Project and Size of the Problem
Intake Criteria
Children and youth in grades 3 - 12 can attend Amicus Recreation programs if they meet our Intake Criteria. If your child has not participated in an Amicus or social skills program through Foothills Academy before, the first step is to complete the Intake process prior to registration taking place.
