About:
Our Music program introduces youth to the joy of creating music in a supportive, social environment. Through hands-on learning, we explore the fundamentals such as rhythm, keeping a beat, and reading music. Each session focuses on developing essential music skills, with special attention on the dulcimer, which offers a unique, accessible way for youth to engage with melody and harmony. From keeping a steady beat to learning scales and playing together in an ensemble, participants gain musical knowledge and skills week by week. Social skill development, including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, is seamlessly woven into each activity, making the program as enriching socially as it is musically.
Weekly Breakdown:
Every Music program is tailored to the unique needs and interests of the group, so no two sessions are exactly alike. However, a typical program might follow a structure like this:
- Week 1: Introduction to music basics—rhythm and keeping a steady beat (with percussion)
- Week 2: Getting to know the dulcimer—basic techniques and note reading
- Week 3: Music theory fundamentals—exploring scales and simple melodies
- Week 4: Group playing—learning to follow the leader and harmonize with peers
- Week 5: Small ensemble practice—focusing on teamwork and cooperation in music
- Week 6: Final performance—showcasing their new skills and celebrating progress as a group
