About:
Chef Amicus is the ultimate introduction to the world of cooking for younger youth, providing a safe, fun, and supportive space to learn essential kitchen skills. Perfect for kids in Grades 5-8 who may be stepping into the kitchen for the first time, this four-week program focuses on building confidence with food preparation, understanding kitchen safety, and mastering basic cooking techniques. Each session is designed to teach young chefs valuable skills like chopping, measuring, and mixing, while staff members are there to guide and encourage them every step of the way.
In addition to cooking, Chef Amicus naturally nurtures important social skills, such as communication, teamwork, and patience. Kids learn to work together as they share tasks, practice clear communication, and support one another, which is key to the collaborative cooking process. With experienced staff who understand the needs of youth with ADHD and learning disabilities, the program offers an inclusive, hands-on experience that combines the joys of cooking with essential skill-building and social development.
Weekly Breakdown of Activities
Programs are tailored to the interests and preferances of the participants, so no two Chef Amicus sessions are ever the same. However, most follow a structure similar to the following:
- Week 1: Kitchen Safety & Fruit Smoothies
- Week 2: Sandwiches & Wraps
- Week 3: Veggie Stir-Fry
- Week 4: Sweet Treats and Baking Basics
Intake Criteria
Children and youth in grades 3 - 12 can attend Amicus Recreation programs if they meet our Intake Criteria. If your child has not participated in an Amicus or social skills program through Foothills Academy before, the first step is to complete the Intake process prior to registration taking place.
